Under indirect supervisor, the Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Auditor/Trainer is responsible for promoting high-quality clinical documentation by conducting internal chart audits for all Centura CDI Specialist (CDIS) to validate appropriate query activities and DRG assignments. Responsible for planning and performing CDI education and training statewide. Additional responsibilities include training new CDISs in their new role, along with the appropriate utilization of CDI software and software packages accessed for daily workflows. Works independently majority of the time.
Minimum Education Requirements
Graduate from a program of Nursing, BSN, preferred or graduate of Health Information Management program with a bachelor’s degree preferred
Minimum Experience Requirements
3 years experience in case management, utilization review, health information management, and/or 5 years coding experience in internal audit or coding education required
2 years experience as a CDI Specialist; Advance knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, pathophysiology and disease process.
Preferred knowledge of DRG assignments, ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes, regulatory coding guidelines, and Medicare Part A and Part B regulatory guidelines
Advanced knowledge of 3M Encoder, CDI Software, Microsoft Office applications, Coding Clinical Guidelines, Query Guidelines Excellent organization, analytical, writing and interpersonal skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
Dependable and self-directed with excellent critical thinking, problem-solving and deductive reasoning skills;
Understand and support compliant documentation management strategies that touch all the critical aspects of the clinical documentation process;
Advance knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and troubleshooting computer problems.
Current Colorado RN License or AHIMA credential (i.e. RHIA, RHIT, or CCS) required and maintained
Performs audits to access performance levels of all CDI Specialist to ensure appropriate query activities and DRG assignments.*
Develop and deliver custom education and training at every CDI Specialist.*
Train new CDI team members on CDI concepts and software packages accessed for daily activities.*
Demonstrates excellence in communication skills and interpersonal relations, adheres to hospital policies and procedures, and actively promotes the mission and core values of the organization.*
Work with CDI Lead Educator to communicate physician’s education needs based on audit outcomes.*
Able to effectively educate physicians, coders and others on clinical documentation, coding and reimbursement opportunities.*
Responsible for planning and performing CDIS education and training statewide.*
Educates members of the patient care team regarding documentation guidelines, including attending physicians, allied health practitioners, nursing, and case management.*
Participate in short-term and long-term strategic planning, as appropriate.*
Responsible for performing internal audits and follow up education to CDISs.*
Works independently in an effective and responsible manner.
