Position Summary: Under the direction of the Business Office Supervisor, this position is responsible for completing reviews for all exams including but not limited to Pet/CT, MRI, CT , and Nuclear Medicine. Prior authorizations for all outpatient radiology exams as needed. The Radiology Authorization Coordinator will review order requests for all radiology outpatient services in advance, working closely with technologist, modality supervisors and providers to collect all information necessary prior to a patient's appointment. Also, communicates with front office staff, admissions, centralized scheduling, and technologists throughout the work day regarding status of authorization for scheduled exams (e.g.., communicate need for reschedule and/or cancellation if authorization not in-hand). Respects and protects the patient's rights to confidentiality and privacy and discloses information only for the professional purposes which are in the patient's best interests according to HIPAA guidelines.
Displays a positive attitude and exceptional customer service when interacting with provider's office staff, providers and fellow employees. The Radiology Authorization Coordinator will use his/her professional judgement of care coordination opportunities and refer those cases as needed to the Business Office Supervisor for further review. The Radiology Authorization Coordinator will apply medical health benefit policy and medical management guidelines to authorize services and appropriately identify and refer requests to the Business Office Supervisor, Radiology Director, Revenue Cycle Director and or Medical Director when guidelines are not met for further evaluation. Active participation in development of on-going process improvements related to authorization management processes. Answers phones, schedules, and assists patients and families as needed. Position Requirements: Has the ability to work independently detail oriented with multi-tasking and strong prioritizing skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with departmental officials/staff; ability to work in a fast-paced environment under multiple deadlines; strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with all levels of professionals within the organization; proven teamwork skills; ability to use independent judgment and; proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Licensure / Certification / Registration:
High school graduation or equivalent. Medical terminology, typing and computer skills are helpful.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
6 months of authorization experience. Knowledge of radiology guidelines for Medicare/Medicaid and all commercial payers. Excellent knowledge in Medical Terminology, CPT Codes, and ICD-9 codes.
Degree of Supervision Required:
Supervised daily by lead clerical and Manager of Radiology. Also supervised by technologists for accuracy on patients orders and records.
