Position Summary: The Emergency Clinician demonstrates the ability to accurately assess and direct the disposition of the behavioral health patient seeking psychiatric service. The Emergency Clinician has an understanding of risk management, triage and admission/discharge criteria. This clinician is current on referral sources and interacts effectively with patients, peers and other staff on appropriate patient treatment options. Possesses a broad knowledge of regulatory laws as it relates to care of the mentally ill and the drug/alcohol patient: understands the disease pathology associated with emotional/mental illnesses and addictions, and their models of treatment. The Emergency Clinician is able to act professionally under stressful conditions, by effectively setting priorities. Clinician must have excellent critical thinking skills.
Clinician is responsible and accountable for independent behavioral health emergency evaluations of acute psychiatric/addiction patients in emergency departments of HealthOne facilities. Position requires knowledge of State of Colorado mental health and addictions regulatory criteria for emergency mental health holds and addictions emergency commitments and EMTALA. Position is responsible for determination of need for clinical consultation with psychiatrist and medical consultation with emergency department staff. Position is also responsible for coordination of disposition, care, community resources, including seven day a week, 24 hour a day triage of behavioral health patients. Responsible for coordination of care with state and local governmental, nonprofit, mental health centers, practitioners and law enforcement agencies. Responsible for collection of comprehensive biopsychosocial data, assessment/determination of lethality/risk, pre-certification of medical care with insurance/managed care entities. Position is also responsible for operation of 24-hour emergency crisis telephone line and responsible for med/surgical psychiatric/addiction evaluation/consultation backup for medical floor evaluators and on-call medical floor psychiatrists. Additionally, when the need arises, position will perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
A. Licensure/Certification/Registration: BLS-Healthcare provider, current State of Colorado licensure with no restrictions (LCSW, LPC, LMFT, or Psychologist) required. Colorado addictions certification (CAC II or III) or other specialty certification preferred.
B. Education: Masters Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, related field of study required. Post Masters related coursework preferred.
C. Experience: Five to seven years of clinical/direct behavioral healthcare experience with minimum of two years of emergency evaluation/consultation experience or acute behavioral healthcare experience required.
D. Special Qualifications: Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be knowledgeable of State of Colorado, Mental Health Services 27-65 statute and regulations as well as Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division 25-1-301 and 25-1-1106 statutes and standards and EMTALA. Must be knowledgeable of behavioral health emergency populations, evaluation, consultation, and process. Must have excellent interpersonal communication skills. Must have ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously. Must have ability to work in high acuity and stressful environment. Must be able to apply critical thinking process. Must be able to formulate diagnostic impressions based upon review of systems, history, symptoms, and current presentation. Must be able to provide crisis intervention and engage multiple systems in diagnostic formulation and disposition.
