Summary Ophthalmic Technician
Ophthalmic Technician II assists eye care providers in the care of patients and flow of clinical activities. Position requires excellent understanding of ophthalmic practice and patient care. Knowledge of medical instrumentation and its proper care and usage. Ability to establish safe environment for patients and staff. Ability to effectively communicate with patients, co-workers, faculty and leadership is an essential function as is the need for efficient use of time.
Demonstrates appropriate documentation based upon UCH polices and clinical standards. Documentation accurately reflects services and care, and supports continuity of safe patient care. Documentation is reviewed by staff and appropriate facility charges are assigned.
Participates in the delivery of patient care by performing basic ophthalmic testing procedures, assessments, and tasks delegated by the eye care provider.
Must demonstrate and maintain proficiency in the following ophthalmic tests at all times of employment with the University of Colorado Hospital: visual acuity testing, manual and auto lensometry, manual refraction, angle assessment using Von Herrick's scale, pupil assessment, and Goldmann applanation tonometry.
In addition to the testing outlined previously in this document, competency in additional testing, procedures, and assessments is required but not limited to the following: basic motility, corneal topography confrontation visual fields, Humphrey visual fields, simple color vision tests, Schirmer's, ocular dressing, pachymetry, Brightness Acuity Test (BAT), Amsler's Grid, Worth 4-Dot, calibration of equipment, using a slit lamp to note variations from normal, specular microscopy, IOL Master, manual keratometry, pneumotonometry, Wavescan, basic knowledge ophthalmic pharmacology, and administration of dilation and/or anesthetic drops.
Demonstrates proficiency in the cleaning of dirty instruments the safe transporting of contaminated instruments and equipment to the Sterile Processing Department.
Ophthalmic Vocational training or completion of 1 year sponsored training on the job
Successful demonstration of required ophthalmic technical skills as assessed by Educator prior to hire and on an ongoing annual basis
3 years health care-related experience
Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card
Certified Ophthalmic Technician Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology preferred
3 years as Certified Ophthalmic Assistant
