Assists in the smooth daily operations in the Family Life Unit by managing supplies and equipment on the unit in a cost effective manner, promoting teamwork with physicians and personnel of this department and of other departments, and following and maintaining Quality Improvement protocols in the OR and elsewhere on the unit.
Minimum Education Requirements
High School Diploma or GED
Minimum Experience Requirements
One-year experience in surgical setting.
Current BLS certification required from American Heart Association
LPN or 3rd year in a accredited nursing program or Completion of an approved course for Operating Room Technician or 5+ years of OB Tech experience.
SAN basic NRP Certification required upon hire or within 6 months
Assists in Delivery of High Quality Patient Care
Functions effectively as a scrub technician. Sets up room prior to case following department procedures, maintains sterile technique, passes correct instruments, demonstrates accurate sponge counts, collects specimens and conserves supplies.
Responsible for acquiring and assembling equipment and supplies in LDRP operating room; clean instruments if required
Assists with various patient care activities e.g. passing and picking up patient trays and transporting patients as requested, observation of healthy newborns including diaper changes and bottle feeding under the direction of an RN.
Demonstrates proficiency in accurate collection and documentation of adult vital signs and reports changes immediately to patient's RN.
Maintains Clean, Efficient Environment of Care
On completion of the case handles soiled instruments and sterile supplies appropriately, cleans room according to established guidelines, collects placenta and disposes of tissues and linen according to sound infection control techniques including universal precautions and bio-hazardous waste disposal.
Maintains supplies (surgical, dietary, linen...) on the unit and in rooms, in accordance with hospital procedures, physician preference cards, and patient needs. Ensures that work environment, equipment/supplies are clean, functioning properly and orderly throughout the workday.
Perform equipment checks to ensure proper function
Consistently utilizes knowledge of aseptic technique and proper use/documentation of the Steris and Autoclave
Maintain ready rooms for laboring patients including suction, oxygen, warmer, delivery cart, monitors, and other equipment and supplies
Effective Communication / Critical Thinking
Effectively communicates with surgeon and nursing staff, anticipating possible problems or complications that could arise
Adjust quickly and prepare for emergency, emergent cases, staffing and patient volume that changes work flow
Maintains efficiency under stress and with irregular working hours
Participates in any customer service initiatives implemented by the unit. Making patient room rounds, offering linen, straighten room, offering fresh water or snack.
Clerical duties as necessary answering phones, monitoring call lights, admitting and discharging visitors from unit ordering equipment and entering charges according to unit policies.
Medium Work - exert/lift up to 50 lbs. force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. constantly
