The unit based educator is a registered professional nurse who demonstrates expertise in a specific area of clinical nursing and is responsible for developing, implementing, & evaluating a program of education for an assigned population. Programming includes initial and ongoing staff competency (including a standardized unit-based orientation), as well as continued education as identified by needs assessments and regulatory requirement initiatives. Applies policies, procedures, standards, and regulations as appropriate to their populations. The scope of the education will be determined through collaborative practice with unit management, educators, and advanced practice nurses to enhance the quality and cost effectiveness of patient care.
BSN required Master's Degree preferred
Specialty certification in related area preferred.
Work Experience :
Minimum 4 Years' experience in clinical specialty
RN, BLS, ACLS (in critical care areas) RN licensure in the State of Colorado
Ensures standardized unit based orientation. Develops, plans, and implements initial and ongoing staff competency, noting non-compliance of staff. Coordinates all annual skills competencies assuring all staff are competent to practice in assigned areas. Ensures that applicable regulatory standards are met in the organization (associate competency evaluation) Provides input to management regarding identification of individual staff skills as it relates to staff performance. Advances healthcare practice by applying policies, procedures, standards, and regulations as appropriate to their populations. Enhances professional development and quality of care through observation, verbal critique and coaching, and written appraisal of staff. Ensures that results of quality improvement activities are integrated into nursing practice. Educational needs and opportunities identified by the nurse educators and advanced practice nurses using data from the organization such as regulatory requirements, survey information, employee and customer input (evaluation data) will be utilized by the unit based educator for application of unit specific education. Is knowledgeable of current healthcare trends. Evidence-based practice and adult learning theory is reflected in project and course content. Identifies barriers to learning and facilitates solutions to remove those barriers. Collaborates with unit management, educators, and advanced practice nurses to enhance the quality and cost effectiveness of patient care.
Utilizes theory and principles of adult education to foster the educational development of staff.
Evaluates the quality of programs and services offered, including class evaluations and incorporation of feedback into program improvement Is responsible to report course statistics, including evaluation data, attendance numbers and types, completion or success scores, etc to department director Identifies and evaluates appropriate products, programs, and services, based upon needs assessment for populations served, for planning of or improving of educational offerings at the unit level. Collaborates with managers, charge nurses preceptors and staff to identify educational needs of staff regarding nursing care and/or equipment as it relates to quality patient care. Presents a selected topic or inservice to unit(s) a minimum of 6x/yr. Provides input to management regarding identification of individual staff skills as it relates to staff performance. Participates in 90% or more of the organizational clinical competency committee meetings Demonstrates advanced clinical skills, judgment, and nursing process in the management of specific patient populations (area of clinical specialty) delivering high quality patient care. 6% of the unit based educators time will be dedicated to patient care at the bedside Provides feedback to nurse educators who participates in unit , hospital, system committee/task force to maintain and improve the delivery of patient care. Develops, implements, and evaluates programs to address deficiencies identified in the documentation audits. Assists unit manager(s) with staff selection of preceptors.
