Assesses behavioral health patients and offers diagnostic and therapeutic support in conjunction with staff psychiatrist and psychiatric assessment. Provides advanced practice professional nursing care for behavioral health patients, following established standards and practices. Acts in collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary care team to coordinate and promote quality and continuity of care, from time of admission through transition of care at time of discharge. Serves as primary liaison, resource, clinical expert and educator for patients, family, physician and interdisciplinary providers.
Education Requirements (i.e., BSN, High School Diploma, GED)
BSN from accredited school of nursing
Master's Degree in Nursing or applied area of knowledge
Advanced Practice Registered; Prescriptive Authority preferred
Minimum of one year direct behavioral clinical experience in a healthcare facility or setting. Competence with DSM-IV diagnostic criteria and treatment planning. Inpatient, crisis, and emergency room experience preferred.
License/Certifications (i.e., RN, BLS, ACLS)
Current Colorado Nursing License
Clinical Nurse Specialist certification in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing
Position Duties (essential job functions, INCLUDE % OF TIME)
Follow established nurse practitioner and clinical guidelines, including those outlined in the Collaborative Practice Agreement.
Complies with established hospital, division and department policies, procedures and standards which include, but are not limited to the following: safety, infection control, use of information systems and confidentiality guidelines.
Participates in quality assurance activities as assigned related to quality patient care.
Assesses behavioral health patients and offers diagnostic and therapeutic support in conjunction with staff psychiatrist and psychiatric assessment team
Evaluates lethality and determines appropriate disposition of behavioral health patients including discharge planning and follow up care in ER, ICU, and medical/surgical floors
Provides medication support through prescription of psychotropics and consultation on behavioral health cases
Works in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team of ER and inpatient physicians, personnel, social workers, managed care representatives, and other disciplines as indicated
Renders professional and age appropriate care of the adolescent, adult, and geriatric behavioral health patient
Promotes the health potential of the whole person and assures the optimal implementation of behavioral health services
Serves as primary psychiatric liaison and medical floor /ER psychiatric consultant in the absence of the staff psychiatrist
Adheres to budget guidelines set forth by supervisor.
Participate in routine reviews to assess utilization of nurse practitioner role.
Establish a cooperative working relationship with inpatient managers, nurses, educators.
