Under minimum supervision, leads and provides administrative leadership for pharmacy services across Denver Health and Hospital Authority (DHHA). Assumes responsibility of all inpatient and ambulatory pharmacy functions. Responsible for maintaining compliance with regulations of licensing authorities and regulatory agencies at all hospital and outpatient pharmacy locations. Effectively manages the human resource needs at all locations. Establishes pharmacy services which are cost-effective and sufficient to meet the needs of the patient as determined by the Medical Staff and DHHA Administration. Maintains pharmacy areas with adequate space, equipment, and supplies for the storage, preparation, and dispensing of drugs. All drug storage and preparation areas within the pharmacies, throughout DHHA, and in the clinics are under the supervision of the Administrative Director. In conjunction with the medical and nursing staff, shall develop and maintain written policies and procedures governing the safe administration of drugs and biologicals. Assures that written policies and procedures that are essential for patient safety and for the control, accountability, and intra-hospital use and distribution of drugs are reviewed and revised as necessary, and enforced.
Education: Bachelor of Science or equivalent. An advanced degree (Doctor of Pharmacy MS, MBA, MHA, etc.) is strongly preferred. Completion of an accredited approved residency program, or demonstrates equivalent experience.
Experience: Typically five (5) years of previous hospital or health system pharmacy administrative experience in a large hospital or health system. Be familiar with clinical, administrative, educational, and research activities in hospital or health system pharmacy practice. Extensive experience with computerized drug distribution systems, drug preparation and drug use control systems, drug product selection, purchasing, inventory control, and clinical pharmacy services. Possess previous experience with computerized pharmacy management systems and electronic medical record systems.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, methods, clinical practices, techniques and materials of pharmacy. Broad knowledge of modern health care administration, practices, and principles within an academic medical center and safety-net health system setting. Knowledge of and ability to apply research principles, methodology, and practices utilized in a pharmacy environment. Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision and administration as applied to the management and direction of personnel within all areas of accountability. Effective managerial and administrative abilities as applied to the management of multiple programs within Pharmacy services. Effective leadership and human relations abilities. Effective communication skills both in written and verbal presentation. Effective analytical ability in order to develop and analyze options, recommend solutions to and solve complex problems and issues. Ability to work harmoniously with all levels within the institution. Ability to effect collaborative alliances and promote teamwork. Ability to insure a high level of employee, patient, visitor, and external stakeholder satisfaction. Ability to evaluate business opportunities and major contracts and relationships. Must demonstrate evidence of initiating change and innovation. Must have an executive presence sufficient to evaluate materials related decisions in terms of the overall mission and long term goals and objectives.
Certificate/License/Registration: Valid State of Colorado Pharmacist’s License or eligible for licensure at the time of appointment. Maintains continuing education credits to maintain professional licensure. Has the training for aseptic technique and sterile product preparation as required by law, if applicable. All Certifications and Licenses required for this job must be kept current as a condition of continued employment.
