The Registrar Oncology supports the mission of Wesley Medical Center and Wesley Woodlawn Hospital of optimizing the quality of life of all those served by expanding beyond the traditional focus on medical needs to the needs of the whole person. As part of the Cancer Registry team, this position is responsible for a variety of functions, including: identify reportable neoplasms, collect clinical data, code and enter medical information in the Cancer Registry database and performance of life-time-follow-up to provide cancer incidence, treatment and outcome information for quality improvement activities, administrative planning and marketing, support programs and research activities. Assists with quality control activities, information requests, quality improvement studies and research projects as requested.
Identify reportable neoplasms. Review and abstract information from patient medical records including demographic characteristics, history of neoplasm, diagnostic procedures, final diagnosis, state, extent of disease and treatment
Code and enter into the database: topography, morphology, treatment, stage and other required information in compliance with standards set by the American College of Surgeons and Kansas Cancer Registry
Obtain on-going follow-up information to include medical status, 1st recurrence, death and autopsy information from patient medical records, letters or phone calls to provide end results information. Perform clerical functions of follow-up as needed
Organize, enter and maintain patient computer data to ensure conformance to Cancer Registry Policy and Procedure Manual and to meet the needs of the users of registry data
Coordinate weekly Cancer Conferences (if applicable)
Participate in educational activities of local, state, and national Cancer Registrar associations. Review reference material, on-line training modules and participate in other educational opportunities
Assist with special projects as required
Perform independent research and solve complex coding problems
Serve as coach and educational resource to entry level Cancer Registrars (if applicable)
AA degree with course work in medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology OR completion of NCRA approved post secondary curriculum in cancer data management/cancer registry OR equivalent on-the-job training OR > 5 years experience in a Cancer Registry
Preferred Education or Experience
3 years' experience in a Cancer Registry approved program preferred
Required Knowledge and Skills
Data coding, medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, basic keyboarding/data entry
Basic knowledge of Windows-based software
Excellent organizational skills with detail orientation and good follow through
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
AJCC Cancer Staging and Collaborative Staging Manuals
Excellent investigative/analytic skills with detail orientation; and date quality control
Ability to work effectively with physicians and coworkers
