Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a registered nurse who is specially trained to provide comprehensive care to child and adult sexual assault survivors and perpetrators. Demonstrates competency in conducting a forensic examination and has the ability to provide expert witness testimony in court. Has the ability to obtain detailed medical history, perform a head to toe physical examination, collect forensic evidence using a standard evidence collection kit, photo colposcopy or digital colposcopy and other evidence collection procedures to augment the documentation of findings.
Colorado SANE education will consist of verification of completion of 48 hours of didactic training and 90 clinical training.
Clinical hours will include 24 hours of gynecological exams and 24 hours of pediatrics exams with a physician or nurse practitioner specializing in each of these areas and 24 hours of jury trial courtroom observation.
The remaining hours will be spent doing 10 sexual assault exams on children and six sexual assault exams on women/men greater than 12 years of age with a practicing SANE or physician.
Current CO RN license.
American Heart Association BLS required within 90 day orientation period.
OTHER REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Two letters of reference or knowledge of applicant’s standard conduct of practice by SANE coordinator.
Meet all of Mercy Regional Medical Center’s conditions of employment. Achieve continuous, yearly education in area of sexual assault, forensic nursing, women/child health, etc.
Medium Work - exert/lift up to 50 lbs. force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. constantly.
