Summary Director Patient Services RN Provides leadership and administrative direction in the delivery of quality patient care services at University of Colorado Hospital in collaboration with medical staff and other health care disciplines in fulfillment of our mission of patient care, research, education and community service. Supports an environment that promotes our vision. Responsibilities achieved through effective utilization of all resources, implementation of hospital strategic goals and providing leadership for program implementation and evaluation, and policy development. Promotes evidence based practice. Provides an optimum learning environment for students of multiple disciplines. Collaborates with Schools of Nursing for undergraduate and graduate nursing students. Provides community leadership in the development of standards of nursing practice and in the overall development of health care policy. The Director of Patient Services is responsible for holding the nursing staff, imaging staff and rehabilitative staff accountable for the management of safe patient care and maintenance of optimal care delivery outcomes. Demonstrates leadership by collaborating with and supporting hospital and physician leadership, providing strategic direction for the development and implementation of operating systems to attain results. This includes fostering teamwork; supporting an effective system of shared governance; seeking innovative changes that improve patient outcomes; ensuring accountability for patient care; and developing internal and external relationships to benefit patients, the organization and community. Interprets and communicates the mission, goals, vision and strategic initiatives of the organization with all disciplines including patient services and medical staff. Directly supervises/mentors the Care Team Specialist, charge nurses and support staff within assigned scope. Provides for growth and development of all team members. Ensures ongoing competency of Care Team in collaboration with Human Resources and Professional Resources. Adheres to and enforces professional standards as identified by the Hospital. Supports a collaborative environment by demonstrating communication skills that elicit multiple points of view from internal and external sources; facilitates constructive interaction; and presents information clearly, concisely and persuasively. Demonstrates a systematic approach to problem solving, decision-making and the development of clinical and administrative systems including informatics to address daily operations and long-term success. This also includes the collection and analysis of data from internal and external sources relevant to each situation, ability to assess the importance of organizational issues, and the continuous monitoring and evaluating of quality outcomes. Recommends and develops annual budget for assigned areas including the following: translating strategic initiatives into financial objectives for short and long-term planning; projecting realistic revenue and expenses; developing budget models, ratios and benchmarks to support strategic initiatives; prioritizing projects; and analyzing and controlling variances. Compiles, interprets and communicates financial information and objectives to various audiences including staff, physicians and management. Holds Care Team managers accountable for the development and maintenance of cost center budgets that promote optimal utilization and allocation of resources to accomplish defined goals. Responsible and accountable for Human Resource activities including professional recruitment and retention of Care Team managers. Provides direct oversight of Care team managers within assigned scope. Coaches Care Team managers in the development of management and leadership skills. Ensures ongoing competency and compliance of the Care teams in collaboration with Human Resources and Professional Resources. Develops and facilitates processes to improve patient throughput throughout the organization and within the community. Provides leadership for and participates in performance improvement activities including quality improvement, patient safety, environmental, and infection control within assigned areas. Accountable for maintaining compliance with JC accreditation and other internal and external accreditation and regulatory standards including the code of conduct. Participates in the development and compliance of administrative policies and practices that facilitate the provision of high quality care and services. Provides a climate that mentors Care Team members in their professional growth and development, application of technical skills, and development of effective interpersonal skills. Serves on and provides leadership to health care related organizational work groups, both within and external to University of Colorado Hospital. Participates/represents University of Colorado Hospital in the community, region, state and nationally. Serves as a consultant and resource to health care providers in the assigned areas of administrative, educational, research, clinical and ethical issues. Supports evidence based practice and the conduct of research Performs administrative functions in a cost-effective manner, striving to ensure the appropriate allocation of resources without jeopardizing quality of care and service. Maintains competency and enhances professional growth and development through continuing education, conferences, and seminars. Attends and updates mandatory training. This position requires the employee to be responsible for the assessment, treatment, and care of patients of certain age categories, as appropriate to assigned patient populations. The age specific populations this employee may competently care for may include the following: q infant (023 months), q pediatrics (211), q adolescent (1217), q adult (1874), and q geriatric patient (75 and older). It is expected that the employee will be competent to interpret age-specific developmental, physiological and unique care needs by assessment and by observation of care delivery. Responsible for knowing and demonstrating National Patient Safety standards. Participates in department-based activities and initiatives to improve and ensure a safe environment. Participates in performance improvement activities, quality improvement and patient safety activities, and assists in maintaining compliance with Joint Commission accreditation and other internal and external regulatory standards including the code of conduct. Graduate from an accredited Baccalaureate School of Nursing.Master's Degree in Nursing or Administration or signed agreement to complete Master's Degree in Nursing within agreed upon specified time frame.
5 years of progressively increasing administrative roles including responsibility for multiple units.
Current license to practice professional nursing in the State of Colorado.
BLS through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer with card in-hand before start date.BLS or CPR card must be good through sixty days of hire.All life support certification cards must be issued by either the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer. (American Red Cross for the Professional Rescuer is only good upon hire and all renewals will need to be through an American Heart Association sanctioned course.)
