The Director of Patient Safety is responsibility for directing University of Minnesota Health’s (M Health) efforts to improve patient safety. This individual will work closely with senior M Health executives to provide leadership in developing a comprehensive program to minimize patient harm through the implementation of systems that: create a culture of safety; proactively identify risk; encourage adverse event reporting and detailed analysis of safety events and near misses; and facilitate leadership, clinician and staff learning. The Director develops strategic and operational plans that build upon the present patient safety program to assure M Health continues to proactively address patient safety issues and meets national best practice levels representative of the organization’s “world class academic medical center” vision.
Collaborates with leadership, clinicians and staff to develop and implements initiatives that create an appropriate patient safety culture.
Provides leadership and direction to M Health’s patient safety strategy, coordinating with Fairview system goals and strategies.
Formulates short and long-term priorities and goals for improving patient safety.
Identifies, develops, reviews, prioritizes, and disseminates measures of patient safety throughout M Health.
Partners with data analytics to develop the patient safety scorecard and/or dashboard indicators in conjunction with the medical and nursing staff and hospital leadership as a mechanism for tracking and analyzing patient safety goals.
Continuously evaluates and improves the patient safety program based on internal needs and external requirements and standards.
Participates in process improvement teams that directly support M Health patient safety goals.
Responsible for implementation and sustainment of organizational initiatives to improve patient safety (i.e., Safety Always)
Manages and informs all processes related to event reporting and analysis including development and optimization of event reporting systems
Facilitates integration of the patient safety program into all patient care operations to include incorporation in leadership rounds.
Develops clear expectations and a process for analyzing trends, identifying root causes and ultimately developing solutions to issues identified during the rounding process.
Prepares and reports status of patient safety activities to relevant leadership committees (ex. Patient Safety Committee, Medical Executive Committee, Board, etc)
Educates leadership, clinicians and staff regarding basic patient safety and their role in ensuring that patients are not harmed during care delivery.
Proactively communicates with and educates leadership and staff regarding patient safety initiatives and activities.
Provides direction to ensure that clinical services are provided in accordance with safety standards established by federal and state regulatory agencies and the Joint Commission accreditation standards, including the National Patient Safety Goals.
Remains fully informed of national and local patient safety mandates.
Manages the sentinel event process for M Health.
Establishes and maintains a customer service-oriented philosophy for the Patient Safety department and their dealings with all customers.
A Master’s degree in healthcare field or related discipline is required.
Minimum of five (5) years of progressive administrative leadership experience in patient safety activities in an academic medical center or large, integrated healthcare setting providing subject matter expertise in the art and science of patient safety.
A clinical background
Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) and/or Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ).
