Position Summary: The Histology Technologist provides quality service, a safe, accurate, timely testing for neonates through adolescence, and the adult and geriatric patients in the Laboratory in compliance with CAP, JCAHO, OSHA, and CLIA 88 Standards. He / she functions within the philosophy, policies and procedures of The Medical Center of Aurora / HEALTH ONE and represents the hospital within and outside the organization with a general feeling of positive support. A thorough understanding and application of the Histo-Technology Practice are essential.

Position Requirements: A.Licensure/Certification/Registration: H.T. (ASCP) or eligible and/or HTL(ASCP)
B.Education: Must have a minimum of two year’s training in an approved institution. Requires passing a certified ASCP registry, be eligible ASCP, or work under an ASCP Histo-Technologist. Four year college degree BA or BS including ASCP registry.
C.Experience: Must have thorough knowledge of methods and procedures for fixing, cutting and embedding tissue sections; cutting properties of various types of tissues; staining procedures; methods of mounting sections for microscopic examination; the use of various types of microtomes and other histology equipment.
D.Special Qualifications: The Histo-Technologist shall be technically and theoretically knowledgeable of current instruments and procedures in Histo-Technology. The Histo-Technologist shall integrate current scientific knowledge with technical competency, which relates to the Pathology Department. The Pathology Department shall have an explicit, systematic and on-going Performance Improvement (PI) Program. The Histo-Technologist shall integrate current scientific knowledge and technology into their work practices. The Histo-Technologist shall maintain an atmosphere of professionalism. The Histo-Technologist shall adhere strictly to the Code of Ethics, as defined in the Hospital’s Ethics and Compliance Program. The Histo-Technologist shall demonstrate discretion in all confidential matters. The Histo-Technologist shall demonstrate above average manual dexterity and visual acuity, and possess good color discrimination skills.The Histo-Technologist assists in a variety of job-related duties as assigned. Ensure a safe patient care environment.
Degree of supervision required: Must be able to work independently within laboratory guidelines; must have the ability to make good decisions about the need to solicit input from the coordinator, laboratory director and/or pathologist(s). Must proceed on his/her own initiative in compliance with policies, procedures, and practices prescribed by the coordinator, laboratory director and/or pathologist(s).
Populations and Ages of Patients Served: This position requires knowledge of growth and developmental needs of patients and families. Personnel in this position must recognize and respond to the behaviors of patients and families in each age category. The employee must be able to demonstrate the special skills required to care for patients and their families according to standards. (The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training or experience.)
