Position Summary: Medical Assistant II – Hepatology Full Time Performs medical assistant functions in the Kidney Transplant Clinic—vital signs, review of medications. Retrieving and recording labs, triage of patient phone calls and general assistance to clinic nurses and nurse coordinators. Assist transplant coordinators in pre-transplant evaluations: educational material and chart preparation, scheduling of studies, consults and follow-up visits, retrieval of studies, tracking of required updates, and organizing information and database assistance.

A. Licensure/Certification/Registration: Medical Assistant Certification required or equivalent. BLS B. Education: None required C. Experience: Minimum of one year of Medical Office experience or Unit Clerk on hospital floor D. Special Qualifications: Working knowledge of word processing and data entry. Ability to accurately proofread. Excellent knowledge of English grammar, spelling punctuation and usage. Knowledge of medical terminology. Basic computer skills E. Essential Functions/Duties: (may include but are not limited to the following) 1. Assisting with transplant clinic performing vital signs, obtaining weights of patients in clinic. Review current medication list with patients. 2. Communicate changes in patients’ medical status to nurse coordinators, clinic nurses and physician as appropriate 3. Scheduling of clinic patients for follow-up appointments. 4. Notify patients of upcoming appointments and provide instructions. 5. Retrieve and record laboratory test results in patient record. Retrieve results of diagnostic studies performed at P/SL and other facilities 6. Assisting nursing staff with post transplant phone calls, prescription refills and prior authorization forms from insurance carriers for prescription coverage. 7. Assess and maintain stock of teaching materials for pre and post transplant patients. 8. Schedule patient diagnostic studies and physician consults for pre and post transplant patients. 9. Schedule renal biopsies with radiology and admissions. 10. Assist with coordination of admissions. 11. Assist with annual updates of pre transplant patients. 12. Assist coordinators and clinic nurses with data entry into database. 13. Participate in patient selection meetings. 14. 14. Communicate progress and results of patient work-ups and follow-up testing with coordinators, UNOS data entry for post transplant follow-up.
Degree of Supervision Required: Involves general guidance and supervision by a registered nurse. Employee will be expected to perform most job duties independently and in accordance with established departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
