This position supports the mission of Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center of optimizing the quality of life of all those served by expanding beyond the traditional focus on the medical needs of the whole person. The Transplant Financial Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and clarifying patient-specific financial aspects of care, ensuring that all phases of the are completed in an accurate and timely manner in order to guarantee: (1)Transplant Candidate and family fully understand their insurance coverage as it pertains to transplant benefits (2)Transplant Candidate and family fully understand their personal financial obligation for transplant services and (3)that all processes are conducted according to state, federal and corporate regulations. Provides patients with directions that can be clearly understood. The Transplant Financial Coordinator assists in the coordination of daily department operations when necessary including charging, ordering labs, setting appointments, answering the telephone and mailings. The Transplant Financial Coordinator will work with all members of the multidisciplinary team, insurers and administrative personnel in accordance with the Mission and Values of P/SL. When need arises will perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Interviews the transplant candidate and responsible parties to obtain personal, demographic and financial information required for the registration of the patient
Independently assesses diverse information from variety of sources to determine if candidate has resources to sustain the financial demands before and after the transplant.
Counsels transplant candidate or responsible parties to ensure understanding of the financial liability (share of cost, co-pays, long-term immunosuppressive therapy coverage).
Works closely with insurance companies to fully understand the benefits available to the transplant candidate and effectively educates candidate regarding the benefits as they relate to transplant services.
Analyzes patient financial status and related information to determine if financial assistance may be available through third party organizations.
Works closely with the Transplant Social Worker in obtaining grants and special assistance funds.
Ensures all updates to financial and demographic data are completed.
Obtains pre-certification and verification from any third party payers or employer for each phase of transplant such as evaluation, addition to the UNOS Wait List and transplantation.
Completes all pre-authorizations on behalf of the transplant candidate prior to the candidate being scheduled for transplant services.
Assists the transplant patients to resolve financial problems which may include correspondence with insurance companies, physician billing services and other groups.
Communicates verbally and in writing with the transplant team regarding the financial status of the patient.
Maintains an updated list of insurance clearance on all active patients by reviewing insurance information on all active patients every 6 months,
Ensures that all processes are conducted according to state, federal and corporate regulations.
Serves on the Kidney Transplant Selection Committee providing information related to the candidate’s financial viability for transplant.
Maintains database and statistical reports as required.
Assists with processing of charges in the pre- and post-transplant phase based on current contractual agreements with providers
Solves customer problems, treats customer with dignity, compassion, respect and acknowledges customer and responds quickly to customer needs.

College degree in business or health care field preferred.
3-5 years experience in health care field including experience in insurance verification and authorization, and financial counseling, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Requires excellent human relations and oral/written communication skills.
Must have the ability to assess information, apply critical thinking processes to determine a course of action and relay this information intelligently to the appropriate party.
Clear and concise documentation skills are necessary to provide an accurate log of information exchanged.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of information is essential.
Strong organizational and people skills required to handle the multitude of calls and requests for information.
Knowledge of Medicare and applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
Ability to effectively interview patients and obtain necessary information.
Ability to work effectively with insurance companies.
Excellent typing and computer skills.
Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
