Position Description: The ER Paramedic will collect and convey information to both their team members and the attending Physician regarding the health status of patients. The Hospital Paramedic will perform all duties identified in their job description and validated by competency assessment under the License of the Physician Medical Director. They will report to the Director of Emergency Services. They will serve as a member of the Healthcare team through active communication; documentation; feedback and assistance as needed or requested. The Hospital Paramedic will provide for patient safety. Attend meetings and in-services as required by departmental policy. Contributes to the growth and development of self and department. Maintains an active involvement. Maintains good working relationship with patients, visitors, physicians, co-workers, and other hospital staff. Maintains competence with charting system. They may not, under any circumstances, perform the prohibited functions listed below.
The Paramedic can establish IV access as delegated by a RN. Routine IV access includes initiation of an IV saline lock. (The Paramedic may not regulate IV rates, add additional IV fluids, or perform IV irrigation)
Provides assistance with patient care, transportation of patients, specimens and supplies; cleaning and stocking the department, patient rooms and transport ambulance; other duties as assigned
Performs intra facility transport duties adhering to established job description standards of an Paramedic
Performs assigned tasks and activities according to skill level and patient needs as assessed by the RN
The Paramedic supports nursing personnel in providing care to patients and assists with providing a safe, quiet, clean, organized environment for healthcare delivery
Answers telephone and intercom efficiently and courteously, relaying messages and calls to appropriate personnel and other departments as needed
Maintains records, transcribes physician orders, and assures orders are carried out in an expeditious manner
Coordinates activities of nursing unit with other departments
Recognizes when and how to escalate patient concerns up the chain of command
Presents a positive image at all times while directing customers to appropriate areas
Required Registration, Licensure or Certification:
Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Current certification/licensure as a Paramedic per state requirements.
Required Education or Experience:
High School Diploma
Minimum 2 years of experience as a field paramedic with an EMS agency and/or clinical experience working in a hospital.
Current clinical competency must be demonstrated and additional education/training may be required by the hospital employing the ER Paramedic. Competency assessment, training, education and performance review shall be the sole responsibility of the hospital that employs the ER Paramedic.
