Position Summary: Performs all technical procedures, maintains knowledge of all procedures and protocols pertinent to the department. Maintains proficiency in performance of technical procedures, including venipuncture and capillary puncture on patients of all ages. Collects and processes specimens on patients of all ages as required. Performs test requests on patients with many different clinical conditions (from screening of healthy outpatients up to and including the major, complex intensive care patients) and all age ranges from newborns to geriatric patients. Assists the clerical duties of the department. Performs required function verification of equipment. Communicates with other allied health care professionals and patients according to job requirements. Performs testing in clinical Lab departments as assigned, following the policies and procedures of that department. Position Requirements A.Licensure/Certification/Registration: MT (ASCP), MLT, or specialty, or eligible for registry preferred, or equivalent expertise in the clinical laboratory field. B.Education: C.Experience: Prefer 1-2 years of clinical laboratory experience. D.Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: D.Must have effective verbal and written communication skills in order to communicate in a clear, concise manner with coworkers, physicians, nursing staff and patients. Must demonstrate above average manual dexterity. Must have working knowledge of laboratory computers and instrumentation.
Degree of Supervision Required Minimal supervision; individual proceeds on his/her own initiative in compliance with policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the immediate supervisor, except in situations not understood. IV.Orientation Period: 90 days
1.The MT will integrate current scientific knowledge with technical competency that relates to the Laboratory Department. 2.The MT will participate in establishing and following written policies and procedures for ordering, inventory allowances, monitoring inventory supply, maintenance program, and performing the maintenance program. 3.She/he demonstrates knowledge, responsibility, and participates in the implementation of all aspects of the Safety policies and procedures. 4.The MT will currently be technically and theoretically knowledgeable of instruments and tests in medical technology. 5.The MT will participate in the evaluation, introduction, and implementation of new procedures. 6.The MT will participate in the evaluation, introduction, and implementation of new equipment. 7.The MT displays technical skills and knowledge to ensure timely and accurate patient test results and Quality Control; documents according to P&Ps. 8.The MT makes independent judgmental decisions relating to technical aspects of testing procedures, Quality Control, and results. 9.The MT is able to perform venipunctures and capillary collection for specimen procurement with knowledge of age related techniques and physical structure. The MT will be competent to age-related blood obtainment techniques, amounts of blood obtained, laboratory values, abuse, and communications; focusing on neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatric populations. 10.All MTs shall demonstrate knowledge and responsibility for the on-going CQI. 11.The MT shall integrate current scientific knowledge and technology into their work practices. a.Medical Technologists will assist in orientation and training of new employees and students. b.Medical Technologists will participate in continuing education provided to departments during working hours. c.Medical Technologists will complete Competency Assessment program annually. 12.The MT maintains an atmosphere of professionalism. a.Communicates technical and general information to peers, medical personnel and customers in a positive, courteous, and professional manner. b.Promotes a positive image in daily and professional activities. c.Displays consideration to all customers and peers. d.Maintains a clean, stocked, and orderly work area. 13.Assists in a variety of job related duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director. 14.The MT adheres to all HIPAA regulations for confidentiality.
