GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The critical care transport nursedemonstrates advanced knowledge, skills and understands the unique aspects ofthe population served in the care of his/her patients. Each service also requires specializedskills. The delivery of care is based onthe physical, psychosocial, cultural, safety and learning needs of theindividual patient. The RN may rotate toareas other than his/her assigned service area/s, and will perform only thoseduties for which he/she has demonstrated competency. The RN performs delegated duties consistentwith the scope of practice and functions within the philosophy and overall planof care delivery at AirLife. Theyutilize the experience, education and training to independently deliver nursingcare to critically ill and/or injured patients aboard a variety of fixed wingaircraft, rotor wing aircraft and ground ambulances. Transports may be betweenmedical facilities or directly from the scene of an accident or illness.Assists with marketing activities of program. Supports research projects.
DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Thecritical care transport RN demonstrates awareness of and routinely practicessafe work habits and adheres to the AirLife commitment to Safety. Adheres tocurrent AirLife standards for clinical competence.
Coordinatesall aspects of patient care with the interdisciplinary team, including studentswhen appropriate.
Responsiblefor critical care transport knowledge base including flight physiology, flightstressors and safety for all modes of transport and all environments.
Responsiblefor survival training and skills for environmental extremes.
Performsother duties as assigned.
Deliverscare in accordance with established standards of care/scope of practice.
Providesdirect patient care.
Documentscare thoroughly, accurately, and concisely.
Maintainsconfidentiality of patients and records in accordance with AirLife, Hospitaland HIPAA policies and guidelines.
Mustattend 80% of scheduled monthly unit meetings (4th Thursday of everymonth and then the following Monday). Months with holidays on those dates FSMwill be altered to different date and prior notification will be given toteams.
Mustacquire defined number of continuing education hours per year.
Maintainsproficiency in clinical skills specific to critical care medicine and asdefined in clinical skills.
Recognizesown strengths and weaknesses and seeks help from appropriate sources as needed.
Takesinitiative to share knowledge obtained from workshops and seminars.
Participatesin AirLife committees as directed by the Program Director, Managers, ClinicalDirector/CFN/Medical Director/s.
Participatesin Quality Improvement initiatives including chart audits and reviews, projectsand studies.
Completesall required programs for the HCA, HealthONE and AirLife vendors (ieHealthStream & Links)
Maintainscurrency with the standards of the medical industry.
Abilityto work 12, 24, and 48-hour shifts and travel to remote bases.
Maintainscurrent and unrestricted Colorado Driver’s License

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Demonstratesgood organizational skills. Providessafe and appropriate patient care within the Standards of Nursing Practice atHealthONE and AirLife. Displaysappropriate judgment and problem solving skills. Communicates positively andprofessionally with all internal and external customers.
EDUCATION: Registerednurse. BSN preferred
EXPERIENCE: Minimum offive years critical care nursing experience caring for diverse populations intertiary centers. Previous experiencecaring for patients of all age groups. Preferpre-hospital or previous critical care transport experience. Able to articulateand demonstrate knowledge of critical care transport.
Compact RN license orColorado RN license accepted upon hire, CO license required within 90 days ofhire. Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRP required at time of hire. CFRN, CCRN, CEN, and CTRN certificationhighly desirable. Advanced certification in CFRN, CCRN, or CTRN must beacquired within two years of hire and maintained throughout employment.
DEGREE OF SUPERVISION REQUIRED
Able towork independently and autonomously under medical guidelines and policies andprocedures withminimal support or supervision.
The orientation period is based onexperience and continuous assessment of progress by Program Director, ChiefFlight Nurse, Educators/preceptors and Medical Director/s. Orientation typicallyranges between 16-24 weeks. Orientationincludes HealthONE orientation ideally during first 2 weeks of employment.
Must be able to work in highly dynamicenvironment with exposure to noise, vibration and weather extremes. Must beable to wear Night Vision Goggles (NVG’s) and helmets for extended periods oftime in flight. The weight of each helmet is approximately 3.64 pounds with theadditional weight of the NVG’s of 1.84 pounds.
Maximumweight of 250 lbs with all flight gear.
Weightproportionate to height.
Ableto lift using proper body mechanics. Activities may include:
Liftingall size patients and equipment weighing up to into and out of transportvehicles with assistance.
Carryingheavy equipment over a variety of terrains without assistance.
Mayneed to perform CPR for extended periods of time.
Providers with chronicmedical problems will require approval of AirLife Medical Director/ProgramDirector or Clinical Director/Chief Flight Nurse before employment.
Allemployees must successfully complete a complete background check in accordancewith HealthONE policy and procedure prior to employment.
Priorto employee, each applicant must submit to and pass the pre-employment physicalto include drug screening and physical exam in accordance with the HealthONEpolicy and procedure.
Pre-employmentand annual medical screening will be completed by each flight crew member andremain on file in employee health. Ifthe employee does not want to complete the annual medical screening processthrough HealthONE employee health, they must take a copy of the medicalscreening form, along with the flight crew member job description to theirpersonal physician. The physician must send written notification for theemployees file indicating they have completed the medical screening form. Thismust be completed annually.
Smokingand use of tobacco products are prohibited in AirLife aircraft andfacilities. Off-duty use of suchproducts is strongly discouraged.
