This position is a dedicated sendout or "referral lab" Medical Laboratory Scientist. This role is very outward facing, meaning the MLS will interface frequently with physicians, nurses, and outpatient laboratories who are seeking guidance on sendout tests. This MLS is part of a team who is responsible for packaging, shipping, and keeping track of all specimens that are sent to a reference laboratory. The MLS is also responsible for entering results, calling critical values, and identifying areas for process improvement. While this is not a typical MLS position, this employee uses the clinical lab background to provide accurate and timely lab results in an exciting, new way.
Summary: Performs laboratory testing of patient specimens in one or more sections of the laboratory.
FTE Status: Full Time
80 hours per pay period
Responsibilities: Performs diagnostic/analytic testing of specimens. Interprets, documents and reports test results.
Performs quality control testing, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.
Complies with good laboratory practice and regulatory requirements.
Performs projects as assigned as well as serves as a consultant to laboratory staff and other clinical staff as needed.
Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action.
Credentials: Essential: * American Society for Clinical Pathology. * Medical Technologist * Medical Laboratory Scientist
Other information: Minimum Required Education: Bachelor's degree in related field and graduate of an accredited Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist program. Required Licensure/Certification: Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Medical Technologists (AMT) or as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or categorical ASCP certification in a laboratory specialty/sub-specialty as applicable to job responsibilities. State licensure if required by law. Certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire. Relevant certification as determined at position level. Minimum Experience: None Required.
BLS through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer with card in-hand before start date. BLS or CPR card must be good through sixty days of hire. All life support certification cards must be issued by either the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer. (American Red Cross for the Professional Rescuer is only good upon hire and all renewals will need to be through an American Heart Association sanctioned course.)
