Under close supervision, acts as a clinical expert in the role of surgical technologist on the assigned specialties. Performs in the support and coordination role for assigned surgical specialties in the day-to-day management of scheduled cases. Under the close supervision of a RN, participates as a member of the perioperative nursing team by performing direct and indirect perioperative nursing tasks for patients having pediatric, adult, and geriatric surgical and endoscopy procedures. Performs tasks related to picking supplies and equipment for surgical cases. Scrubs for minor/major/complex surgical procedures. Provides assistant circulator services for major/complex procedures. Transports patients. Under the close supervision of a qualified surgeon, the surgical technologist performs second assisting duties during the surgical procedures (holding retractors and passing instrumentation). Performs technical tasks other than cutting, clamping, and suturing tissues.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Education: High school diploma or GED and a graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology School Experience: Typically, three years' clinical experience in health care as a Surgical Technologist. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of and the ability to use medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments as directed. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, employees, physicians and the public. Ability to assist the RN in the patient holding area and perform perioperative skin preparation tasks. Ability to precept new hire Surgical Technologists and/or RN's learning scrub roles. Ability to assist with the application of casts and splints. Ability to perform OR environmental maintenance duties. Ability to perform all technical tasks that support clinical operations. Ability to participating in regular communication with surgeons. Ability to regularly participation in peri-operative management meetings. Ability to regularly participation in meetings with surgeons and clinic staff. Ability to participating in interviews of applicants within peri-operative services. Ability to deliver care in a nonjudgmental, nondiscriminatory manner that preserves patients' rights. Ability to act as a patient advocate. Ability to assure patient privacy before, during and after procedures. Ability to protect the confidentiality of medical record. Ability to adhere to the DH EHR principals of Informing Clinical Practice, Improving Population Health, and Personalizing Care. Ability to adhere to and meets requirements for Safety and Infection Control Policies. Reports any noncompliance to the Charge Nurse. Ability to practice sound safety and infection control practices according to agency policies and procedures. Ability to provide a safe environment for all patients and to assure proper patient positioning and patient care throughout the patients stay. Ability to evaluate practice in relation to professional standards, statutes, regulations, hospital and departmental policies, and standards of care. Assumes accountability for achieving goals set jointly with the manager and educator for the next valuation period. The primary focus of this position is the scrub person, sterile processing functions, picking for surgical cases and acting as a preceptor. ~Current Basic Life Support for Health Care Provider Certification/ CPR. Successful completion of a Surgical Technologist program with Surgical Technologist Certification, LCC-ST, CST Certification or NCCT, TS-C Certification. All Certifications and Licenses required for this job must be kept current as a condition of continued employment.
