San Luis Valley Health is looking for a Infection Prevention Practitioner to be responsible for the surveillance, analysis, interpretation and reporting of hospital-acquired infections; providing education regarding infection prevention; and developing health system policies and procedures to ensure rigorous infection control standards that meet nationally organized agencies recommendations and requirements.

What You'll Need:
Registered Nurse licensure - BSN preferred
Bachelor's degree in Microbiology or Epidemiology can be substituted for Registered Nurse licensure
Certification in Infection Control preferred
Individuals assigned to this position must maintain the appropriate certification, training/education, licensure or registration as mandated by the specific governing agency.
Minimum two years experience in a hospital setting or disease surveillance experience in a public health setting.
Training in epidemiology preferred
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
What You'll Do:
Apply epidemiologic principals and statistical methods, including risk stratification, to identify target population, analyze trends and risk factors, and design and evaluate prevention and control strategies.
Conduct ongoing surveillance using CDC infection criteria, documentation and investigation of nosocomial infections through review of admission diagnoses, microbiology culture results, isolation orders, patient records, consultation requests and post-discharge surveillance.
Assess environmental control through surveillance of water supply systems as needed, air pressure relationships for high-risk environmental monitoring.
Conduct environmental rounds in all inpatient and outpatient care areas. Collect data on the incidence of selective devices used in identified intensive care units.
Participate in investigation of unusual hospital infection outbreaks utilizing the microbiology laboratory consultation with county/state health departments, and when necessary in consultation with the Center for Disease Control. Report epidemiologically significant findings to the appropriate customers.
Evaluate the effectiveness of the surveillance plan and modify as necessary; adapt to changes in the work environment, manage competing demands and deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events.
Report all in-house patients with communicable disease to county and/or state health departments and maintain appropriate records. Compile and interpret surveillance reports to the Infection Control Committee, specialty areas, and executive medical committee on a regular basis.
Collect and report data to regulatory agencies.
Participate in quality/performance improvement activities; serve as a knowledgeable and available resource on infection control practices and policies to patient families, staff and health system employees.
Participate in continuing education activities.
Maintain confidentiality; read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, journals, technical procedures, CMS standards or governmental regulations.
Write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals; present information and respond to questions from colleagues, customers and the general public.
