Kaiser San Diego Medical Center (SDMC) is an adult anesthesia practice, and there is a core team of pediatric anesthesia consultants who do 5-15 % of their actual practice in pediatric anesthesia. Pediatric cases include general surgery, urology, orthopedics, ENT, plastic surgery, oncology, GI, IR, and radiology. There are 10-20 neonatal cases per year from the NICU. SDMC has a pediatric floor but no PICU. Pediatric team members take one week of home pediatric call once per month during which they are called for NICU cases, children under 1 year of age, or children under 14 who are ASA 3 or higher. There is no CRNA supervision for these specific pediatric core cases.

Working here
The San Diego service area is one the region's largest, with impressive geographical coverage, over 1,100 physicians, and about 25 satellite offices to complement the main medical center. Yet we have a singular, well-defined culture, grounded in three pillars that improve outcomes: maintaining physicians' well-being and their original passion for medicine; keeping the workforce energized and cohesive; and ensuring patient engagement in their own overall health. This formula, along with our size, diversity, and depth of talent, helps the area keep its edge in new technology and clinical expertise. San Diego maintains a high level of integration and collaboration; physicians and new hires alike know they're not alone, that they have the personal support and clinical assistance of an entire team. Educational and research opportunities are actively offered and supported, with residency programs and fellowships, along with participation in clinical studies and trials.
The Department of Anesthesia, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Kaiser Permanente San Diego is a diverse group of 70+ Physicians and 50+ Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists that practice in the team model. Our group hails from the most competitive training programs from coast to coast. We have multiple physicians from each ACGME accredited Anesthesia Fellowship Program: Cardiothoracic (5), Critical Care (3), Obstetric (3), Pain (10), and Pediatric (9), along with team members who have completed Regional Anesthesia (8), Neuroanesthesia (1) and Thoracic Anesthesia (1) Fellowships. All of our partner physicians are Diplomates of the American Board of Anesthesiology.
In San Diego one can expect a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient surgeries that includes all surgical sub-specialties except for Cardiac, Trauma and Transplant. The General Anesthesiologist's practice in San Diego includes bread and butter Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Gynecology, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Vascular, Thoracic, Orthopedic Surgery and out of the OR cases serving Gastroenterology, Radiology, and Interventional Radiology. Night calls are expected and evenly distributed amongst all partners and pre-partners. Your time will be spent approximately 30% supervising CRNA's and 70% doing your own cases. There might be a maximum of one resident working at our main hospital only.
We have enjoyed great growth recently as our flagship hospital, The San Diego Medical Center (SDMC), was opened in 2017, and another major medical center in San Marcos began operation in August of 2023. There are 6 operating sites: 3 hospitals and 3 outpatient centers. Expect travel between Otay and San Marcos, so living centrally is an advantage.
