Overview
The role requires proficiency in a wide range of techniques for safely lifting, moving, and transferring patients. The ability to assess and select the safest and most appropriate transfer method for each individual is essential. The ideal candidate is competent in all aspects of patient handling, including lifting, positioning, transporting, and ensuring safety throughout every movement. A solid understanding of CPR, infection control, equipment management, and adherence to hospital policies and procedures is also required. Strong communication and customer service skills are vital for maintaining positive interactions with patients and staff. Additionally, the role involves working collaboratively with the healthcare team to perform purposeful rounding on the units, following pre-defined response criteria to ensure high-quality patient care.
Responsibilities
Patient Transfer:
Safely transport patients throughout the hospital using appropriate safety equipment and precautions.
Transfer patients via wheelchair, stretcher, to vehicles, and accompany ambulatory patients.
Utilize all available transfer equipment as needed.
Patient Lifting:
Expertly use safety equipment for lifting and transferring patients.
Collaborate with the appropriate number of team members to ensure safe lifting practices.
Patient Safety:
Consistently utilize safety equipment such as gait belts, stretcher/bed brakes, and lifting devices.
Timely Response & Dispatch:
Maintain communication with the department via walkie-talkie, phone, and CareAware.
Respond to all requests within 10 minutes.
Receive and prioritize escort trips and departmental requests.
Accurately log all safe lift technician duties and submit the log at the end of each shift.
Report any concerns or issues to the charge nurse, nurse supervisor, or nurse manager.
Equipment Maintenance:
Clean and maintain stretchers and wheelchairs after each use.
Apply “Green is Clean” tape to indicate cleaned equipment.
Ensure cleaning stations are stocked with necessary supplies.
Patient Care Assistance:
Assist with positioning, turning, lifting, and ambulating patients.
Support complex dressing changes and other patient care procedures.
Provide accurate handoff reports during shift changes.
Participate in purposeful hourly rounding with the healthcare team.
Other Duties:
Proactively seek additional duties or assignments as directed by the Nursing Supervisor or Nurse Manager.
Qualifications
Experience:
Patient care experience preferred.
Previous roles demonstrating strong communication and customer service skills required.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to frequently lift over 50 pounds and push/pull over 200 pounds with no lifting limitations.
Must meet all heavy functional demands of the role without restrictions.
Participation in an ongoing personal exercise program required.
Eligible for gym membership reimbursement up to $240 annually.
Certifications & Training:
Basic Life Support (BLS or CPR) certification required.
Successful completion of training for:
Lift Team
Transport Team
Patient Services Orientation
Completion of body mechanics training with the Physical Therapy Department.
Physical competence reevaluation every 6 months or as determined by management.
Skills & Abilities:
Ability to read, write, and perform basic math calculations.
Able to work effectively under pressure and communicate clearly with patients, visitors, and staff.
Capable of performing routine, repetitive tasks following established procedures and under supervision.
