Kalamazoo, MI - The Board of Directors of Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) seeks a visionary, mission-driven executive to serve as the next Hal B. Jenson, MD Dean, President and CEO. This represents a unique distinctive opportunity to serve as both an institutional and academic leader at an established community-based medical school. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative and accomplished academic physician who will work closely with the board of directors and leadership of WMed, Western Michigan University, and health system partners, as well as department chairs, faculty, staff, graduate medical trainees, students, and alumni.
WMed was established in 2012, with support from an initial $100M gift from the Stryker family. Receiving full Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation in 2018, the first class of 48 students graduated that same year. WMed works in partnership with Kalamazoo's two major teaching health systems, Ascension Borgess and Bronson Healthcare. The school boasts outstanding facilities in six different locations throughout southwest Michigan including a 350,000 square foot educational campus and research building in downtown Kalamazoo, MI. Additionally, the school is the sponsoring institution for ten residency programs and five fellowship programs in various specialties.
WMed is a private nonprofit corporation supported by philanthropic gifts, clinical revenue, research activities, tuition, and endowment income. The dean is the leader of WMed and serves as the president and chief executive officer of the corporation. As president and chief executive officer, the dean has direct oversight of the business of WMed, subject to the general control and direction of the board of directors. The dean is responsible for leading the operations of WMed, driving efficient and effective budget and program administration that achieves excellence in medical education, clinical care, research, and community engagement; monitoring educational and financial performance; consulting with the WMed board of directors in a timely manner on matters appropriate to its governance responsibilities; and serving as the principal spokesperson for WMed.
Building upon the initial foundational gift, WMed received an additional $300M philanthropic commitment, the Empowering Futures Gift, in 2021. This remarkable endowment has allowed the medical school to enter its second decade with a solid foundation. The new dean will have a significant opportunity to build upon this foundation, pursuing clinical, educational, research, and further philanthropic initiatives to provide long-term financial sustainability.
Kalamazoo, situated in beautiful southwest Michigan, offers a thriving downtown, great neighborhoods, proximity to quaint lakeside towns, and is just a few hours' drive from Chicago and Detroit. Highlights of living in southwest Michigan include a four-seasons outdoor lifestyle, excellent schools, and affordable housing. The "Kalamazoo Promise" affords public school students the opportunity to attend any Michigan higher educational institution tuition-free.
Qualified candidates will possess an M.D., D.O, M.D./PhD, or an equivalent medical degree, board certification in the candidate's specialty/discipline by a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties, and academic credentials that will warrant appointment as a full professor.
