Overview
The Patient Transport / Lift team member plays a critical role in ensuring the safe movement, transfer, and transport of patients throughout the hospital. This position requires proficiency in a wide range of patient handling techniques, including lifting, repositioning, and transferring patients using equipment such as gait belts, slide boards, stretchers, and mechanical lifts. The technician must be able to assess each patient's mobility level and determine the safest transfer method in collaboration with the healthcare team. A strong understanding of body mechanics, safety protocols, and infection control practices is essential to prevent injury to both patients and staff. The technician is responsible for maintaining patient safety during all movement procedures, demonstrating competence in equipment use and adherence to hospital policies. In addition to technical skills, this role requires excellent communication and customer service abilities, as the technician frequently interacts with patients, nurses, and other clinical staff. Participation in purposeful hourly rounding is expected, with a focus on meeting patient needs promptly and proactively. The Safe Lift Technician also supports staff during complex patient care tasks, such as dressing changes or ambulation, and contributes to a safe, efficient, and compassionate care environment.
Responsibilities
Patient Transfer:
Transport patients throughout the hospital using appropriate safety equipment and precautions.
Transfer patients via wheelchair, stretcher, or to vehicles.
Accompany ambulatory patients and use any other available transfer equipment.
Patient Lifting:
Serve as an expert in using all safety equipment for patient transfer and lifting.
Collaborate with an appropriate number of team members to lift patients safely.
Patient Safety:
Utilize all required safety equipment, including gait belts, bed/stretcher brakes, and lifting devices.
Timely Response to Pages/Dispatching:
Maintain availability and communication with the department via walkie-talkie, phone, and capacity management systems (e.g., CareAware).
Respond to all requests within 10 minutes.
Receive and prioritize Patient Escort trips and departmental requests.
Documentation & Communication:
Keep an accurate log of safe lift technician duties and submit it at the end of each shift.
Report any problems or concerns promptly to the charge nurse, nurse supervisor, or nurse manager.
Equipment Maintenance:
Clean and maintain stretchers and wheelchairs after each use.
Use "Green is Clean" tape to indicate cleaned equipment.
Maintain supplies at cleaning stations.
Patient Care Assistance:
Assist with positioning, turning, lifting, and ambulating patients.
Support patient movement during complex dressing changes and other care procedures.
Provide accurate handoff reports to the oncoming shift.
Participate in purposeful hourly rounding with the healthcare team.
Additional Duties:
Independently seek out additional assignments or tasks as directed by the Nursing Supervisor or Nurse Manager.
Qualifications
Patient care experience preferred.
Must be able to:
Lift more than 50 pounds frequently.
Push/pull more than 200 pounds with no lifting limitations.
Demonstrated experience in roles requiring:
Strong communication skills.
Excellent customer service skills.
Basic Life Support (BLS or CPR) certification required.
Successful completion of the following training:
Lift Team training.
Transport Team training.
Patient services orientation.
Body mechanics training (with the Physical Therapy Department).
Must undergo a reevaluation of physical competence every 6 months or as determined necessary by the manager.
Participation in an ongoing exercise program required.
Gym membership reimbursement available (up to $240 annually).
Ability to:
Read, write, and perform basic math.
Work effectively under pressure.
Communicate with patients, hospital staff, and visitors.
Perform routine, repetitive duties using well-defined procedures under close supervision.
Must be able to meet the heavy functional demands of the role with no restrictions.
