Description
Join our dynamic team in the Department of Ophthalmology, supporting the Retina Division in Westwood. We’re looking for a Medical Scribe who is knowledgeable of the clinical setting and is passionate about providing exceptional support to physicians and patients alike. In this role, you’ll:
Accurately document medical data in real-time during patient exams
Prepare charts by entering referral info, surgical history, and known diagnoses
Assist physicians in closing encounters and ensuring documentation is complete and accurate
Provide light patient education and complete forms (e.g., return-to-work/school)
Manage medication refill authorizations under physician supervision
Support record keeping: abstracting, scanning, and cataloging into the EMR
Provide general clerical support
Salary Range: $23.58-33.05 Hourly
This is a full-time position with a work schedule of M-F 8am-5pm.
Senate Bill 525 was signed into law by Governor Newsom in October 2023. Starting July 1, 2025, SB525 sets a new $24 minimum wage for nonexempt healthcare workers and raises the exempt employee salary threshold to $1,440/week (equivalent to $6,240/month or $74,880/year).
1. As defined under SB525, healthcare workers are defined as employees who are involved in the provision of "health care services," which means "patient care-related services including nursing; caregiving; services provided by medical residents, interns, or fellows; technical and ancillary services; janitorial work; housekeeping; grounds keeping; guard duties; business office clerical work; food services; laundry; medical coding and billing; call center and warehouse work; scheduling; and gift shop work; but only where such services support patient care".
2. Employees (career, contract, student, per diem) in the UCLA Health medical facilities (e.g. Ronald Reagan Medical Center, Santa Monica UCLA Hospital, Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital, etc.) meet these criteria.
Qualifications
Required:
Exceptional oral and written communication skills including knowledge of medical and ophthalmic terminology to establish effective working relations with all levels of university staff, faculty, trainees, and patients
Demonstrated or acquired competency in office and medical center based data and electronic records systems (ChartLogic, cView, Kaleidoscope, Epic, PCIMS, CDS, etc.)
Ability to work quickly and efficiently under a variable but often very busy workload
Ability to function in a research environment with patients who are enrolled in clinical study protocols
Ability to learn new routines quickly, to follow routines consistently, and identify better ways of accomplishing routine tasks
Proficiency in Apple and Windows operating systems, Microsoft Word and Excel, email, calendaring programs, and web browsers
